Twitter and Tesla CEO Elon Musk participated in a discussion with the Minister of Education, Culture, Research, and Technology, Nadiem Anwar Makarim, in one of the sessions at the G20 Bali Summit. To Elon, Nadiem threw a question that sparked curiosity. “What technology scares you?”

This question was asked by Nadiem in the Intergenerational Dialogue for Our Emerging Future “via video call with 400 students. Elon Musk B20 also revealed two technologies that are frightening from his perspective, namely artificial intelligence (AI) and synthetic biology.

“We have to be a little careful with AI because we don’t want digital superintelligence that malfunctions (make mistakes) and has an impact on humanity,” he explained Monday (14/11).

Synthetic biology, which he considers potentially dangerous because it has the potential to be used to create a food war. It can even give birth to artificial viruses that are more dangerous than natural viruses.

For him, the two technologies are like a double-edged sword. He said, “The greater the power of technology, the more careful we must use it.”

Technological field with bright prospects

Although AI is high-risk, the sector also has bright prospects for the future because it has the potential to give birth to many innovations, such as self-driving cars, drones, smart factories, and so on.

In addition to AI, new renewable energy (EBT) or sustainable energy is also crucial. This is because it is related to the global emission reduction target according to the Paris Agreement in 2015.

It can be seen that now many companies are promoting energy transition efforts by diversifying their business lines. For example, PT TBS Energi Utama Tbk (TOBA) with PT GoTo Gojek Tokopedia Tbk (GOTO), which established Electrum; or PT Indika Energy Tbk (INDY) and Foxconn who share in creating an electric vehicle ecosystem.

“As a technologist, I see sustainable technology as prospective,” he said.

Elon Musk is known to have canceled in person at the B20 Summit Indonesia series of events in Nusa Dua, Bali because he had to attend the court for Twitter-related matters.

He was only able to fill the show via a video connection. What is unique is that Elon has to fill the “Navigating Future Disruption of Global Technological Innovation” session while in the dark because of a power outage.

However, the Coordinating Minister for Maritime Affairs and Investment, Luhut Binsar Panjaitan, said Elon Musk would visit Indonesia in December 2022.
